Fibermaxxing, Protein Hysteria, and the Trap of “More Is Better"

Can't we just let a good thing be a good thing? Plus, what happens when nutrients are turned into tools to silence hunger or control the size and shape of our bodies.

If you’ve been on social media lately, or even seen nutrition-related headlines, you’ve probably seen the rise of “fibermaxxing.” It’s being framed as the key to better digestion, fewer cravings, less bloat… even weight loss. Some are calling it “nature’s Ozempic.”

Fiber is absolutely beneficial. And many people don’t get enough. It supports digestion, blood sugar, cholesterol, and overall health. So yes, I’m a fan (as I am of all the food groups).

What gives me pause is the shift from “this nutrient supports health” to “more, more, more”…trends that start to feel like moral mandates and a new number to track.

Just a few examples of what you’ll find on social media…and I’d say these are quite low-key compared to what else you’ll find when you go down the fibermaxxing rabbit hole.

We’ve seen this before. Protein continues to be in its era of hysteria. Now fiber is stepping into the spotlight.

In this week’s episode, I unpack what the science actually says about fiber intake.

Behind the paywall, we get into:

  • where the trend goes too far

  • nutrition misinformation in social media posts

  • the risks of too much fiber

  • what carbs have to do with all of this

  • safe ways to increase fiber intake

  • the connection between fibermaxxing and disordered eating

  • how to care about fiber, nutrition, and digestion without losing your peace
