When I ask, ‘Are you sure you’re eating enough?’
plot twist...it's not really about the food.
There’s a question my clients ask me often—one that sounds simple, but never really is:
How do I know if I’m eating enough?
What tends to be missed, though, is that this question reaches far beyond calories or nutrients.1 It’s about life. About what you’re allowing yourself to feel, to experience, to enjoy. About what you’ve been taught you deserve, or what systemic barriers keep you from that basic right. About what parts of you have been silenced or shrunken to fit into someone else’s definition of “enough.”

I also want to say this: I’m not the expert in anyone else’s body. And I think that’s one of the greatest myths of diet culture—that someone else (or an app) could ever tell us exactly how much food we need.
So as I unpack this with my clients, eventually I ask, gently, “How do you think you’ll know when you’re eating enough?”
