This week has felt long and short, and hard and good, and everything in between. I’ve been very into: our garden, english muffins toasted with butter, and, of course, debunking the constant nutrition misinformation that seems to keep coming.

Unexpectedly, I wrote a piece on that earlier this week, when normally I write on Fridays.

But rather than skip a day of saying hello to you, I thought I’d share a collection of things you may have missed. PLUS…a 5-minute meal.

Are you finding it hard to hold onto hope right now?

I invited Desiree Adaway, brilliant equity consultant and leader in organizational change, on the pod to help us through this. To say that I’m honored she joined me for a conversation would be a monumental understatement, because I have followed her and her work for years.

LISTEN HERE!

We spoke about…

  • Why she reclaimed breakfast after decades without it.

  • How Toni Morrison taught her to not give a shit about the male gaze.

  • What it means to hold people accountable, while also knowing we only get free together.

  • Why she is literally gonna lose it if she hears one more thing about the “male loneliness epidemic.” (this was my favorite part of the conversation — the nuance and compassion she shared about true liberation)

  • What to do if you are feeling hopeless about the state of the world.

  • How we can all become more comfortable with conflict.

  • And, finally, why she knows we’re going to win — no matter how impossible it feels right now.

Will cooking classes prevent or “cure” diabetes?

Despite Instagram’s effort to hide it, I posted a reel about the incredibly harmful statement made about diabetes by the FDA commissioner, Marty Makary.

Yes, a physician actually said “maybe we should treat diabetes with more cooking classes, rather than throwing insulin at people.” As a person who has multiple chronic illnesses and supports countless clients with the same — including diabetes — the rage I felt was pretty indescribable.

Clean eating will not clean up this mess.

On Wednesday, I wrote about the way “clean eating,” seed oil, and food dye are serving as a distraction from public health policy. Specifically, why this matters if you’ve struggled with disordered eating and body shame.

Read it if you’re confused about ingredients. If you want to understand why this moment matters for eating disorders. If you feel bogged down by the food fear-mongering, and need help seeing the bigger picture.

While We Debate Salad Dressing...

The other day, I was eating an English muffin with cream cheese, minding my business, when I opened my phone to yet another panic spiral about seed oils, food dyes, and how “clean eating” is the only path to health.

This week wouldn’t be complete without hopping on the “propaganda” social media trend. Always on brand, I was late to the party. But there’s this one, too.

Okay. With all of that, I wanted to tell you that I’m starting a new Friday thing, where I share a 5-minute meal I made in the past week.

Why? Well, one of the things I hear most often from my clients, my group membership, and those of you who reach out in DMs is that food can feel really overwhelming.

It might be that you feel strapped for time and unable to cook. Maybe you’re lacking an appetite because of stress or grief. Perhaps it’s that you get stuck overthinking what to eat because you’re anxious about all the nutrition noise from diet culture. Or you’re just plain confused about what constitutes a meal — bombarded with “shoulds” that keep you from remembering that fed is best.

Enter: Meals you can make in 5 minutes.

This is going to be a paid subscriber perk! And I’m just a little bit excited about it. Yes, I have endless 5-minute meals to share. Seriously. Because while I love to cook, it’s just not my top priority right now, and I’d rather have quick, convenient, satisfying meals that don’t sap my energy (unless, of course, I’m really craving a slow weekend afternoon of cooking something nostalgic).

This week’s quick eats features some pantry staples, plus a bagged delight…
